FLEXIBLE PACKAGING APPLICATION ENGINEER

I am recruiting for an established flexible packaging business looking to appoint a technically strong, customer-focused Application Engineer to support its continued growth within food packaging.
This is a highly customer-facing position, providing the technical link between customers, sales and manufacturing. You will support packaging projects from initial material selection and development through to trials, troubleshooting, qualification and full commercialisation.
The role would suit someone with strong practical knowledge of flexible films and converting processes who enjoys getting onto customer production lines, solving technical problems and helping turn development projects into commercial business.
THE ROLE
- Provide on-site and remote technical support during customer trials, material qualification, machine setup and commercialisation
- Troubleshoot packaging issues including sealing, leakage, delamination and barrier performance
- Plan and support laboratory testing, pilot trials, customer-line trials and industrial scale-up
- Analyse technical results, identify root causes and recommend corrective actions
- Work closely with the sales team, providing the technical expertise required to develop opportunities and win new business
- Support customers with material selection, packaging performance, shelf-life and application development
- Deliver technical presentations, product recommendations and training
- Work with customer packaging, engineering, quality, operations, procurement and product-development teams
- Support projects from initial concept through to successful commercial launch
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Experience within flexible packaging, films, food packaging or converting
- Strong knowledge of materials such as PE, PP, PA, PET, EVOH, aluminium foil, metallised films and recyclable mono-material structures
- Understanding of laminates, adhesives, coatings, heat sealing and barrier properties
- Experience supporting technical trials and troubleshooting packaging performance on production equipment
- Knowledge of processes such as extrusion/coextrusion, lamination, flexographic or gravure printing, pouch converting, thermoforming or form-fill-seal would be advantageous
- Understanding of food packaging requirements including shelf life, seal integrity, oxygen/moisture barrier and food-contact compliance
- Strong customer-facing and communication skills
- Commercial awareness and the ability to work alongside sales to convert technical projects into revenue
- Willingness to travel regularly to customer and manufacturing sites
